Caring for Old Cats

Old cats require more maintenance as they get older. Visiting the vet more frequently can help to deal with any problems before they become a serious issue. There are a couple of other things you can concentrate on to prevent the most common mature cat health issues.

One of the most common causes of health problems in older cats is poor dental care. Certain breeds may be predisposed to dental problems. The type of food you feed your elderly cat and your cat’s personal eating and chewing habits can also effect their dental health. Chewing more while eating can help to rub plaque off the teeth.

Mature cats need to have their teeth checked and cleaned on a regular basis, about once every six months, to prevent the buildup of plaque. Plaque causes tooth decay and gum problems which can lead to other serious illnesses like deterioration of internal organs. All of these effect the cat’s quality and length of their life. Commonly, the cats that live the longest have lost all of their teeth!

Older cats also suffer from stiffening of the joints and muscles and even arthritis. No longer limber young kittens, they’ll need a soft, but supportive sleeping surface. Keeping their bed clean, warm, and away from drafts and disturbances will help maintain their good health. Naturally clean animals, they do their best to clean themselves and will need their bed cleaned often or they may choose to abandon it for a fresher location even if they must sacrifice comfort.

Purchasing a cat bed would be an excellent choice. Most are very reasonably priced and offer features and advantages over a household pillow, cushion, or blanket. Most are very soft and many can be found with extra support for stiff and sore joints. They commonly have a tall back and sides to offer comfort and security while your cat sleeps in their natural curled up position. To maintain cleanliness, most beds can be easily washed or have covers that can be removed and washed.

A few simple extra considerations when caring for an aging cat can ensure a longer, healthier, more comfortable life.
